D-Backs claim Nieves from Rockies

Catcher Wil Nieves was claimed by the Arizona off waivers from Colorado before Monday night's game against Pittsburgh.

Arizona placed Henry Blanco on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained left thumb. Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said Blanco was headed back to Phoenix for an MRI to determine whether a ligament was torn.

Nieves was designated for assignment by Colorado last Wednesday after hitting .298 with one homer in 16 games with the Rockies and .306 with three homers in 111 at-bats for Triple-A Colorado Springs.

The 40-year-old Blanco is hitting .188 with one homer in 21 games.
