Bruised foot keeps Phillips out of Reds lineup

Published Aug. 8, 2010 6:05 p.m. ET

The Cincinnati Reds held All-Star second baseman Brandon Phillips out of the lineup Sunday against the Chicago Cubs because of a bruised left foot.

Phillips fouled a ball off his foot in the eighth inning of Saturday's 4-3 win. He struggled getting down the line as he grounded into a double play and was replaced in the ninth inning by Miguel Cairo.

Although he was available to pinch hit, manager Dusty Baker says he wanted to make sure Phillips is ''100 percent better'' for the three-game series against St. Louis which opens Monday.

The NL Central-leading Reds began the day 1 1/2 games ahead of the second-place Cardinals.

Baker also held Scott Rolen, Drew Stubbs, Laynce Nix and Ramon Hernandez out of Sunday's lineup.
