Bay has more tests on rib muscle

Published Mar. 30, 2011 11:08 a.m. ET

Mets left fielder Jason Bay has returned to New York for tests on his strained left rib cage muscle.

Bay left Florida Wednesday morning, and the team expects to know more details about the injury later in the day. He began feeling discomfort during batting practice on Tuesday.

It is unclear whether the issue is related to the back stiffness that shelved Bay on Saturday and Sunday. He was set to return to the field Monday but the game was rained out. He was scratched from Tuesday's lineup against the Nationals.

The Mets have until Thursday to make a roster move if Bay needs to go on the disabled list. Lucas Duda remains in camp and could earn a spot. Nick Evans was placed on waivers Monday and his status is unclear.
