'The Homer,' beloved play-by-play man critically injured in crash, man arrested
Longtime Marquette basketball radio play-by-play man Steve "The Homer" True was critically injured in a Wednesday morning car accident in Milwaukee involving a driver later arrested and accused of DWI, according to multiple reports.
True was going through an intersection and had the green light when a car ran the red light and T-boned True's car, Milwaukee police told WISN 12 News. WISN reported that True was "in critical condition at Froedtert Hospital on Wednesday night, with what WISN 12 News was told is a serious head injury."
WISN said that the 44-year-old driver of the other vehicle was given a blood test at an area hospital and then subsequently arrested and accused of intoxicated use of a motor vehicle causing great bodily harm.
While the hospital listed True's injuries as critical, subsequent comments indicate that True — who turned 59 on Wednesday — seems to be in good spirits.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, radio co-host Mitch "Thunder" Nells opened the Homer & Thunder Show saying "Home is mostly OK." He then added that True was mad he could not be on the air.
According to WISN, Craig Karmazin, president and CEO of the company which owns 540 ESPN, said that True's wife Nancy told him "Homer is doing pretty well and that doctors want to monitor his condition overnight."
Marquette head coach Buzz Williams released the following statement:
"Homer is one of my all-time favorite people in the world, and I sincerely mean that. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."
True called Tuesday night's game at home against Grambling; a Froedtert Hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday night that no information was available regarding True or his condition.
