NEW YORK (AP) Two people briefed on the situation say Columbia coach Kyle Smith is going to be hired at the University of San Francisco as the basketball coach.

The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity on Wednesday because no official announcement has been made.

He led Columbia to the CollegeInsiders.com Tournament title Tuesday night. It was one of the best seasons in school history as the Lions went 25-10 - the most victories ever for the Lions.

Smith replaces Rex Walters, who had coached at San Francisco for eight seasons. He was let go this month by the school. The Dons were 15-15 this past season. Smith is familiar with the West Coast Conference having spent time as an assistant at Saint Mary's from 2001-10.
