Tyler Buchner - Showcases legs, arm in win Buchner completed all three of his pass attempts for 78 yards and one touchdown while rushing seven times for 68 yards in Saturday's 32-29 win over Toledo.
Impact The freshman quarterback gave the Fighting Irish a spark off the bench while starting quarterback Jack Coan struggled to direct the offense for most of the day. Coan still rallied the Fighting Irish with a game-winning touchdown pass to tight end Michael Mayer, which should be enough for the signal-caller to retain the starting job heading into the Sept. 18 matchup with Purdue. That said, Coan is likely on a short leash, and Buchner's superior rushing ability should at least allow him to continue to have a role Week 3 in select packages.

Impact After a strong Notre Dame debut versus Florida State, Coan took a step back in Week 2, but he came through in the clutch with an 18-yard game-winning touchdown to tight end Michael Mayer in the final minute. At times during the game, Fighting Irish head coach Brian Kelly went to freshman Tyler Buchner under center, with the first-year player completing all three of his pass attempts for 78 yards and one touchdown while rushing seven times for 68 yards. While Coan is expected to start against Purdue in Week 3, there's no doubt that he'll be on a short leash in what projects to be a tougher matchup, especially with Buchner performed so well behind him.
