Rays send LHP Cesar Ramos to Angels in exchange for RHP Mark Sappington

The Tampa Bay Rays traded left-handed reliever Cesar Ramos to the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday in exchange for right-handed reliever Mark Sappington.

Sappington, 23, earned a 4-1 record with a 6.02 ERA in 42 appearances (17 starts) in time split between Double-A Arkansas and Class-A Inland Empire last season. After converting to the bullpen in July, he went 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA and five saves with 49 strikeouts in 25 relief appearances. The Angels took him in the fifth round of the 2012 MLB draft.

Ramos, meanwhile, was 2-6 with a 3.70 ERA in 43 appearances (seven starts) for Tampa Bay last season, one that began with him losing a tight competition in spring training with right-hander Jake Odorizzi and left-hander Erik Bedard for the Rays' fifth-starter slot. The 30-year-old posted a 5-9 record with a 3.66 ERA in four seasons with Tampa Bay. A native of Los Angeles who owns a 3.90 ERA in parts of six major-league seasons, this move represents a return home for him.
