Mavericks select center Bhamara of India in second round

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:42 p.m. ET

The Dallas Mavericks selected 19-year-old center Satnam Singh Bhamara in the second round with the 52nd overall pick. Bhamara is the first player born in India to be drafted in the NBA.

Bhamara stands at 7-2, but could not qualify academically in India to play Division I basketball in the United States. He attended IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle hinted that the team would do something unexpected with their final allotted selection of Thursday's draft.

"We have 52 and you just never know what is going to take place down there," Carlisle said. "With the depth in the draft there are going to be a lot of players in the second round this year in my opinion that make the league, so we will see what happens."

"We're really looking for everything and not anything too specific," General Manager Donnie Nelson said before the draft.

As a 15-year-old, Bhamara represented India in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championships.

Bhamara is the first ever 52nd pick in Dallas franchise history.
