Magic forward Channing Frye to miss time with sprained knee

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Channing Frye, the forward who the Orlando Magic are counting on heavily for the upcoming NBA season, suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee Thursday during practice.
It is unclear how much time Frye will miss, although an MRI revealed no significant damage.
Frye, who didn't miss a game last season as a member of the Phoenix Suns, bumped knees with teammate Ben Gordon during the third day of Magic training camp. He described the injury Friday as "a freak accident" and added "it could've been way worse."
The Magic signed the 6-foot-10 Frye to a four-year, $32 million contract in July with the expectation of him providing the 3-point shooting required to open up their offense. Depending on how long he is sidelined, the bulk of minutes in his absence are likely to fall to Tobias Harris, Andrew Nicholson and Kyle O'Quinn.
The Magic open their preseason Tuesday night at Miami. Their first home preseason game is Oct. 15 against Flamengo of Rio de Janeiro, the winners of the Brazilian National League title, and will be televised by FOX Sports Florida.
