Heat sign Michael Beasley for remainder of season

In a widely expected move, the Miami Heat announced Wednesday the re-signing of forward Michael Beasley for the remainder of the season.

Beasley, the former No. 2 overall pick of the 2008 draft, played well in his third stint with the team averaging 9.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 22.9 minutes while shooting 42.4 percent from the field in 10 games.

"Michael has been very good," head coach Erik Spoelstra said at the conclusion of Tuesday's Heat practice, which marked the end of Beasley's second 10-day contract. "With all the changes and the moving parts -- I've said this before -- we're very fortunate to be able to add a player that's familiar to us, to our system.

"I'm very comfortable with Michael. I've spent a lot of time with Michael over the years in development. We've put in a lot of time in his development. He's improved a great deal and has helped us while he's been here. So he's made the most of his opportunity and then we'll just go from there."

Miami signed him to a pair of 10-day contracts beginning on Feb. 26 after Chris Bosh was lost for the season due to medical issues related to blood clots on his lungs. Beasley's signing means the Heat have the maximum-allowable 15 players on the roster, all with guaranteed contracts this season.

He joins guards Tyler Johnson and Henry Walker in securing a guaranteed contract for the season after signing two consecutive 10-day contracts, the most allowed by the NBA for a player with the same team.

"Overall, I feel like I've gotten better as a player on both sides of the floor and also as a person," Beasley said on Tuesday. "I feel like I've showed I can help a team win."

Though contract details were not released by the team, Sun-Sentinel writer Ira Winderman is reporting the deal possibly includes a team option for next season and is for the veteran's minimum.
