D.C. United and Columbus Crew remain winless after low-scoring MLS weekend

Adam Jahn finished a Shea Salinas cross in the 88th minute Saturday night and the San Jose Earthquakes tied D.C. United 1-1.

The same cities met nearly 20 years ago, on April 6, 1996, when D.C. United and the San Jose Clash kicked off the first Major League Soccer match at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.

Both Jahn and Salinas entered as substitutes after the 70th minute for the Quakes (3-1-0). Jahn redirected Salinas' diagonal entry pass with a roundhouse, right-footed kick.

Patrick Nyarko opened the scoring for United (0-2-3) in the 34th minute with a high-leaping header from the center of the area off Lamar Neagle's cross.

Nyarko left the game on a stretcher in the 82nd minute. He had an awkward landing after his attempt to defend a San Jose cross in the attacking end.

United and the Columbus Crew are the only winless teams remaining in MLS.

Vancouver Whitecaps 0-0 L.A. Galaxy

Matias Laba was shown a straight red card in the first half, but the Vancouver Whitecaps still held on for a 0-0 tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday night.

The midfielder was sent off in the 28th minute for a challenge on Los Angeles counterpart Mike Magee outside the Whitecaps' penalty area.

Vancouver (2-2-1) is now unbeaten in three straight, while Los Angeles (2-1-1) picked up its first road point of the season.

After an emotionally charged opening 45 minutes that included Laba's dismissal, the Whitecaps sat back after halftime down a man, content to soak up pressure and try to hit the visitors on the counter attack.

Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted made a stunning desperation save off a deflected shot from substitute Gyasi Zardes in the 70th minute to keep things level.

Sporting Kansasa City 1-2 Real Salt Lake

Justen Glad scored his first MLS goal, Luke Mulholland added another and Real Salt Lake beat Sporting Kansas City 2-1 on Saturday night.

RSL went up 1-0 in the 29th minute when Glad sprinted past the back line on Joao Plata's free kick and headed it in. Glad was a hometown signee in 2014.

Mulholland made it 2-0 in the 79th minute. After two failed clearances and a giveaway on a RSL corner kick, Mulholland bent in a long-range shot.

RSL (2-0-2) improved to 2-6-5 all-time at Sporting KC -- snapping a seven-game winless streak at KC. Since 2010, the road team in this rivalry has won just two games in 13 meetings.

RSL had several other quality chances. Yura Movsisyan was left open in front of goal in the 38th minute but Tim Melia came out of his box to deflect it. Movsisyan cut back a defender in the 57th minute and sent a close-range shot off the crossbar.

Diego Rubio was tripped up at the edge of the penalty box and Benny Feilhaber converted the penalty kick for Kansas City (3-1-0) in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Chicago Fire 1-0 Philadelphia Union

Kennedy Igboananike scored early in the second half and the Chicago Fire beat the 10-man Philadelphia Union 1-0 on Saturday in blustery conditions.

Igboananike settled a ball with pace from Michael Harrington in the 51st minute and slid a shot inside the far post.

Chicago (1-1-2) won just its second game in 12 matches dating to last season while Philadelphia (2-2-0) had its two-game winning streak stopped. Chicago has not lost to the Union in seven consecutive meetings - with three wins and four draws.

Veljko Paunovic won his first MLS game as coach of the Fire. He played 17 games for the Union in 2011.

Philadelphia had a pair of near misses in the first half. C.J. Sapong's header in the 29th minute hit off the crossbar and his redirection in the 41st hit the post.

The Union's Warren Creavalle received his second yellow card of the game in the 47th minute for a tackle from behind.

Seattle Sounders 1-0 Montreal Impact

Clint Dempsey scored off a header in the 79th minute and the Seattle Sounders beat the Montreal Impact 1-0 on Saturday night, becoming the final MLS team to earn a point this season.

Seattle (1-3-0) was on the verge of going winless in its first four matches -- three of those at home -- until Dempsey picked up his first goal of the season. The goal came off a corner kick from Andreas Ivanschitz, catching Montreal goalkeeper Evan Bush too far off his line and Dempsey was able to come free at the back post.

It was just the third goal of the season for Seattle. The lack of scoring from Seattle's offensive stars has been one of the early surprises in the first month of the season.

On Tuesday, Dempsey scored for the U.S. in its World Cup qualifying victory over Guatemala, becoming the all-time leading scorer in World Cup qualifying for the U.S.

Montreal (2-2-0) started the night tied for the lead in the Eastern Conference, but lost its second straight and struggled to break down Seattle's defense with forward Didier Drogba not making the trip to play on Seattle's artificial surface. The Impact had 11 shots but only four forced Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei to make a save.

Seattle altered its lineup for the first time this season bringing Jordan Morris off the bench after spending the previous two weeks with the U.S. under-23 team in their failed attempt to qualify for the Olympics. Seattle also rested defender Joevin Jones after a stint with Trinidad and Tobago in World Cup qualifying. Jones played the final 15 minutes after an injury to Dylan Remick.

With Morris resting, Seattle went with Aaron Kovar up top with Nelson Valdez and Dempsey but the trio was unable to create many chances. Until Dempsey's goal, the best opportunity for Seattle came in the opening seconds of the match when Valdez raced onto a loose ball in the penalty area, only to see the shot saved by Bush.

FC Dallas 1-1 Columbus Crew

Tesho Akindele tied it in the 77th minute and FC Dallas moved alone atop the overall MLS standings, salvaging a 1-1 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.

Maximiliano Urruti sent a 25-yard blast crashing off the right post to set up Akindele's goal. The rebound deflected off the back of goalkeeper Steve Clark, who had made a diving save attempt, and rolled into on open area in front of goal where Akindele raced in for an easy finish.

Justin Meram opened the scoring in the ninth minute, heading home Federico Higuain's corner kick. The Crew had a number of early opportunities to extend their lead that were stopped by goalkeeper Chris Seitz, who finished with five saves.

FC Dallas (3-1-1) improved its home unbeaten streak against Columbus to seven games. The Crew (0-2-2) -- last year's MLS Cup runner-up -- remained winless in the 2016 campaign.

Colorado Rapids 1-0 Toronto FC

Luis Solignac scored in the 18th minute and the Colorado Rapids held off 10-man Toronto FC for a 1-0 win on Saturday night.

Solignac controlled Marco Pappa's chip and sent a right-footed shot into the right corner of the goal. Pappa, in his first year with Colorado (2-1-1), has a goal and two assists to account for all three of the Rapids' goals this season.

Benoit Cheyrou was sent off with his second yellow card in the 13th minute after he collided with Bobby Burling on a header. His received his first yellow two minutes earlier for a hard tackle against Eric Miller.

Sebastian Giovinco knuckled a free kick over the crossbar in the 92nd minute for Toronto FC's last chance to pull even.

Toronto (1-2-1) has completed half of its eight-game road trip to start the season while awaiting renovations to BMO Field.
