Brewers trade for left-handed reliever Freeman

The Brewers on Tuesday acquired relief pitcher Sam Freeman from Texas and demoted Ariel Pena after he struggled in Monday's opener.

The left-handed Freeman, 28, has a 3.23 ERA in 108 2/3 innings of relief since 2012. He had a 3.05 ERA in 54 relief appearances for Texas last season, striking out 40 and walking 25. He pitched for the Cardinals from 2012-14.

The Brewers acquired him in exchange for cash.

Pena, 26, gave up five runs and three home runs in 1 2/3 innings. He started five games for the Brewers last season, posting a 4.28 ERA.
