Will Corey Graham move to safety in 2015?

Published Jul. 14, 2015 8:38 p.m. ET

Buffalo Bills cornerback Corey Graham has been a versatile player in the NFL during his entire career. In his first season with the Bills last yearn, Graham started eight games at cornerback and one game at safety.

With the departure of safety Da'Norris Searcy this offseason, it appears the Bills are thinking about moving Graham from cornerback to safety. While Graham doesn't have much experience, Bills defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman believes Graham is up for the task. “Corey Graham is a fit on this defense.”

After spending time in minicamp and OTAs practicing at safety, Graham is starting to notice the differences between safety and cornerback.

“It’s totally different. It’s nothing like corner,” Graham says. “To me corner is totally different. You’re in press (man) a lot of times. You’re on an island. Safety you’ve got to take better angles. You’re in the run fits a lot. You’ve got to help out and stay in the middle of the field. You’ve got to be disciplined. You’ve got to be smart and get everybody aligned. So it’s a lot more thinking at safety, but corner is a lot harder to actually play.”

More specifically, Graham has to get used to seeing all 22 players at once as opposed to just the man across from him.

“It’s not just really about what you’re doing. You have to pay attention to what everybody else is doing,” he says. “You have to get everybody lined up. You have to think about what’s going to happen if one guy motions because it could change the whole defense. Corner you’re just pretty much in man. It’s totally different. It’s a lot more thinking, studying, preparing and anticipating, but you can make a lot of plays if you know what you’re doing.”

Graham will be a valuable piece on the defense as he tries to use his years of experience to shore up the back end of what could be one of the NFL's best defenses.
