Vincent Jackson signs tender, reports
San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Jackson has reported to the team and has signed his one-year restricted free-agent tender valued at $583,000. Because Jackson refused to sign the tender by June 15, the Chargers were allowed to lower his salary from $3.268 million to just $583,000.
By reporting now, Jackson will still be able to get six games in, the amount needed to get one accrued season toward free agency. Had he not reported this week, he would be a restricted free-agent next year if the old free agency rules are in effect.
And because the Chargers placed Jackson on the roster exempt list, he’ll have to miss the next three games. The team has a Week 10 bye, so Jackson won’t be eligible to play until Nov. 28 at the Indianapolis Colts.
“It feels good to be with my teammates. I’ve missed football more than you can imagine,” Jackson said. “Right now I’m just looking forward to being able to practice and get back on the field. My only concern is doing whatever I can to contribute and help the team win. The future will take care of itself.”
Unfortunately for the Chargers, Jackson’s absence couldn’t come at a worse time. WRs Legedu Naanee (hamstring) and Malcom Floyd (hamstring) are nursing injuries. Naanee has missed the past three games, while Floyd missed last week’s game.
“I’m happy Vincent is here,” said general manager A.J. Smith. “I have no doubt he will go to work, work hard and quickly get into game-shape. Once he starts playing in games, I don’t think it will take him long for him to be a contributor and help us.”
