Vinatieri a 'traditionalist' when it comes to extra points

The NFL's decision to change the distance on extra-point attempts was met with mixed reactions from the Indianapolis Colts pair of kickers.

On Tuesday, league owners approved a proposal to move point-after tries from the two to the 15-yard line.

For Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri, who is entering his 20th season in the NFL, the change isn't necessarily a welcome one.

“I’m a traditionalist," Vinatieri said, according to Colts.com. "I like the way it (was), but I understand they are trying to change the league to make it different."

The three-time Pro Bowler said the new distance may be a factor in the latter part of the season.

“Early in the year, I don’t think it changes much,” Vinatieri said. “I think come playoff time, when it’s windy, cold and fields are in crummy conditions, it might change some stuff.”

Punter Pat McAfee, who servers as holder for Vinatieri, didn't seem all that concerned.

“It will add a little competition to the extra point, but I also think it will put a little bit more emphasis on kickers to be good," McAfee said. "If you have a good kicker, it’s really going to show because you kick more extra points and field goals obviously. We have the greatest of all-time on our team, so it should be a lot of fun.”
