Vikings decide to re-sign Rosenfels
After cutting ties with several long-time players last weekend, the Minnesota Vikings are bringing back one of their veterans.
A source told FOXSports.com that quarterback Sage Rosenfels has agreed to terms on a new contract. Additional details weren’t immediately available.
Rosenfels was claimed off waivers by Minnesota last season following the team’s release of quarterback Donovan McNabb. Rosenfels spent time with Miami and the New York Giants in 2011 but ended his stints with both on injury lists because of a virus.
Rosenfels was originally acquired by the Vikings in a 2009 trade with Houston. He was expected to compete for a starting spot before Minnesota signed Brett Favre.
Had he not re-signed with the Vikings, Rosenfels was expected to become one of the more attractive veteran quarterback options in free agency. Now entering his 12th NFL season, the 34-year-old Rosenfels has 12 career starts in stints with five different franchises. Those travels have made him well-versed in a variety of NFL offensive systems.
The Vikings cut ties with three of Rosenfels’ teammates — cornerback Cedric Griffin and guards Steve Hutchinson and Anthony Herrera — on Saturday.
Rosenfels is expected to compete in Minnesota with Joe Webb for the backup spot behind Christian Ponder.
