Video shows shooting of former player

Former Washington State and New York Giants running back Jermaine Green was arrested in late September and charged with felony aggravated battery, accused of holding a woman at knifepoint during a standoff with police.

On Wednesday, police in Daytona Beach, Fla., released video of the incident, which ended with Green being shot several times by officers on the scene.

The video link below, first aired by WESH 2 in Orlando, is graphic, and police say it shows officers breaking down a door to find Green, 32, holding a knife to the throat of his girlfriend, 37-year-old Katrina Johnson. In the video, the woman is dragged into a bedroom and a knife is put to her chest, leading two of the three officers on scene to open fire.

Green was hit several times in the leg and Johnson was hit once in the arm, but both were treated at a nearby hospital and have since recovered. Daytona Beach police chief Mike Chitwood said he believes his officers handled the situation correctly.

"I'm proud of what the officers did," Chitwood told the Orlando Sentinel. "Everybody went home to their families."

A graduate of Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange, Fla., about eight miles south of the scene of the crime, Green played two seasons at Washington State after spending two at a junior college in Kansas. He was the Cougars’ leading rusher in 2002 with 829 yards and nine touchdowns on 150 carries.

Green signed as an undrafted free agent with the Giants in 2004, but was released before the start of the season.
