Victor Cruz weighs in on the Geno Smith situation

Published Aug. 13, 2015 12:20 a.m. ET

On Tuesday, New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith was punched by his former teammate, and the result was a broken jaw. After Wednesday's joint practice with the Bengals, reporters asked New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz if he was surprised to hear the news.

"Obviously being in a locker room, you never expect something like that would happen," Cruz said Wednesday, per True Jersey. "But, nothing surprises me in this day and age anymore."

Cruz called the situation unfortunate and he could only send his best wishes to Smith and the organization as a whole.

"It's unfortunate for Geno, it's unfortunate for the Jets' staff and organization," Cruz said. "It's something you never want to see happen. Hopefully he gets to recovery healthy and quickly so he can get back out there and help his team."
