Unbeaten Panthers coach Ron Rivera gets coaching advice from his mother

Unlike most head coaches, answering questions from reporters at press conferences probably feels like a breeze for Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera.

That’s because at some point every week he has to answer questions about his coaching strategy from his mother, and Rivera told Black and Blue Review that she’s his “hardest critic.”

The Panthers are 12-0, so one would think that Dolores Rivera would hang a big “12-0″ on her fridge like any proud mother. But she still sees areas that need some work.

“Now it’s not just about winning. It’s about doing things better,” said Rivera, a candidate to win the NFL Coach of the Year award for the second time in three seasons.

This mom knows her stuff, too. She recognizes zone coverage when she sees it and she tells her son that his team needs to blitz more.

So if the Panthers don’t win the Super Bowl, will Rivera be grounded?
