LOS ANGELES (AP) UCLA has hired Josh Lewin as the school's play-by-play announcer for football and men's basketball to replace Bill Roth, who has departed after a year behind the mic.

Lewin is in his fifth season handling play-by-play duties for the New York Mets and will be starting his 12th season as the voice of the San Diego Chargers this fall. He takes over for Roth, who quit last month to return to the East Coast, where he spent 27 years in a similar role for Virginia Tech's football and men's basketball teams.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero announced Lewin's hiring on Thursday.
