The Raiders could benefit from Eric Weddle's latest drama

Published Dec. 29, 2015 11:49 p.m. ET

Eric Weddle might be seeking more than just a new contract when he hits free agency.

The two-time All-Pro safety could want revenge against the San Diego Chargers for so publicly spurning him. And there's no better place than Oakland to earn it.

Think about the upside to Weddle swapping AFC West teams. He'd instantly step into Charles Woodson's shoes as the Raiders' defensive leader. He'd get to stay in-state and probably wouldn't need to uproot his family -- particularly if the Raiders move to Los Angeles.

And, moreover, he'd square off against the team which deemed he wasn't worth a long-term deal. Oakland could grant his wish with a reported $70 million in cap space this offseason.

Money aside, those two annual meetings with San Diego might be too good to pass up. Weddle will bolt the Bolts -- and the safety-needy Raiders could stand to benefit.
