Sylvester Stallone makes a funny when defending Eagles coach Kelly

If there’s one person whose opinion could help drum up support in the City of Brotherly Love for much-maligned Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly, it’s ... Sylvester Stallone?

Stallone of course became an adopted son of Philly decades ago after writing and starring in “Rocky” (and its numerous sequels), a rags-to-riches, Oscar-winning film about an underdog boxer who rose from the mean streets of Philadelphia to become a champion.

With the Eagles sitting at 1-3, the coach under siege and the team’s season on the line with a critical game against the New Orleans Saints at Lincoln Financial Field looming Sunday, Stallone was asked his thoughts on Kelly.

The actor wouldn’t go so far as to equate Kelly’s dire situation to that of Rocky Balboa as the aspiring pugilist attempted to escape Philadelphia’s slums by jumping into the boxing ring. But the action legend did provide an endorsement for the Eagles coach, if not a clumsily articulated one.

“Philadelphia to me has always been kind like an underdog city and they come off those slow starts, but they build up a head of steam,” he said in part. “So, I don’t think it’s time for Chip’s ahoy yet.”

Alrighty then.

Had Stallone actually offered Kelly some advice, he probably would have suggested the coach take early morning runs up the steps to the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. That seems to inspire hope.
