Steelers name GM, and it's not a Rooney
Kevin Colbert, the Pittsburgh Steelers' longtime director of operations, has been promoted to become the first general manager in the franchise's history, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Monday.
Colbert's elevation went unannounced, with the new title appearing only in the team's 2011 media guide. The job change also was recorded in Colbert's online bio, which said he is in "his first year as the team's general manager."
The 54-year-old joined the Steelers in 2000 after a decade as the pro scouting director for the Detroit Lions.
While employing player personnel directors and directors of football operations, the Steelers went 78 years without a general manager.
Former team president Dan Rooney previously claimed he did not need one, because he filled the role himself.
