Davis, who abruptly retired before prior to the 2015 season, spent all of last year giving his mind and body a chance to heal before filing for reinstatement in 2016. San Francisco owned Davis’ rights, but the former Niners’ first-round pick seemed at odds with the franchise at various points during his absence.
Nonetheless, Davis’ return from retirement seemed to be a welcomed addition for a 49ers offensive line needing reinforcement this season.
Davis didn’t immediately get his starting job back though. Second-year pro Trent Brown secured the starting right tackle spot to kick off 2016. And while there were thoughts Davis could slide inside to guard, the 26-year-old veteran ended up being a mere reserve to start the season.
And, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Davis had even considered retirement earlier this season, only to be coerced into staying. At least for a while. He also dealt with yet another concussion suffered during practice, according to the organization.
Davis subsequently tweeted out his rationale for retirement:
Surprising? No. Not exactly. While we shouldn’t fault Davis for wanting to take care of his body, it’s hard to say this is a shocker.
Three months ago, Niner Noise stated it was time to move on from Davis. While his return seemed to stand in the face of this assessment, it’s fairly clear the early prediction was correct.

Regardless, one can only hope Davis finds whatever it is he’s looking for in retirement. And one should hope the Niners can move forward without much difficulty.
They’ll have to.
