Rivera begins filling out staff at Carolina

New Carolina coach Ron Rivera has begun to fill his staff, with Sean McDermott reportedly picked as defensive coordinator.

ESPN reported McDermott was hired Monday, two days after he was fired as Eagles defensive coordinator. Panthers spokesman Charlie Dayton said he couldn't confirm the move.

The 36-year-old McDermott's duties are unclear, as Rivera said he would run the defense. Under McDermott, Philadelphia allowed 377 points this season, the most since 1974.

The Panthers did announce Monday that former defensive coordinator Ron Meeks accepted a demotion to secondary coach.
