Report: San Francisco 49ers pledge $1 million to Bay Area community foundations

The San Francisco 49ers have pledged one million to Bay Area community foundations in order to address social inequities, reports Jim Trotter of ESPN.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that the money will go to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and the San Francisco Foundation.

The donation comes in the wake of quarterback Colin Kaepernick's recent protest of racial inequalities and injustices in the United States. Kaepernick chose not to stand during the national anthem throughout the NFL preseason, most recently kneeling for the duration of the song during the team's 31–21 preseason win over the San Diego Chargers.

The quarterback also pledged to donate the first $1 million he earns this season and the profit he earns from best-selling jersey sales to various organizations that help communities. His donation vow is reportedly to the team’s pledge.

The 49ers will take on the St. Louis Rams at home to kick off the 2016 season.
