Washington Redskins offensive tackle Trent Williams was suspended without pay for four games by the league Tuesday for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Williams, whose suspension begins immediately, will be eligible to return after the Redskins play the Cardinals on Dec. 4.

"Today, Trent Williams was suspended by the NFL under the terms of the Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse for the next four games," the Redskins said in a statement. "We met with Trent today to discuss this unfortunate news. Per the terms of the Policy, Trent will be permitted to participate in team meetings and workout at the Redskins' facilities throughout this time. The Redskins are counting on Trent to help our team when he returns from suspension. Our focus will now turn to the Minnesota after our bye this upcoming weekend. Any questions related to this matter should be directed to the NFL or NFLPA."

The Redskins, who are 4-3-1, selected Williams, 28, with the fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft. He’s been voted to the Pro Bowl four times.

The suspension couldn’t come at a worse time for the Redskins, who will face the Vikings, Packers, Cowboys and Cardinals during Williams’ absence.
