Raiders reduce roster to 53

The Oakland Raiders placed starting linebacker Aaron Curry on the physically unable to perform list Friday and cut returner Roscoe Parrish to get down to the 53-man roster limit.

The Raiders waived 17 other players Friday and placed tight end Tory Humphrey (hamstring), punter Marquette King (toe) and safety Brandon Underwood (hip, groin) on the reserve-injured list to cut the roster down from 75.

The other players waived are linebackers Nathan Stupar, Kaelin Burnett and Chad Kilgore; receivers Derek Carrier, Brandon Carswell, Eddie McGee and Travionte Session; offensive linemen Kevin Haslam, Nick Howell, Dan Knapp and Colin Miller; defensive linemen Hall Davis and Dominique Hamilton; tight end Kyle Efaw; running back Lonyae Miller, safety Curtis Taylor and kicker Eddy Carmona.

Stupar, a seventh-round pick out of Penn State, was the only one of Oakland's six draft picks who did not survive the final cut.

Linebacker Miles Burris, a fourth-round pick out of San Diego State, looks to be in line for a starting job with Curry inactive to open the season. Curry has been dealing with injuries to both knees and has not practiced all summer.

Curry is eligible to return to practice as early as Oct. 16. Once he returns to practice, he will be allowed to practice for up to 21 days prior to returning to the active roster.

Coach Dennis Allen said there still could be more moves after he and general manager Reggie McKenzie go through the cuts made by the other 31 teams this weekend.

''We're evaluating any and all positions to see if there's someone out there that can help us,'' Allen said.

The Raiders brought in Parrish earlier in the week after he was let go by San Diego in hopes of providing a boost to the return game. But he lost a fumble and muffed a punt Thursday night against Seattle and did not last long in Oakland.

The biggest issues for the Raiders right now are depth, which was glaringly exposed in a 23-3 exhibition loss to Seattle on Thursday night when many of the front-line players saw little or no action.

While most of the roster decisions were made before that game, Allen said there were still about eight spots that were up in the air before that game. Few players made an impressive statement.

''That's been a concern, the depth on our roster,'' Allen said. ''I think it just reconfirmed that we have to upgrade the bottom half of the roster because depth is a concern.''

There were a few players who stood out positively, including cornerback-returner Bryan McCann and rookie defensive linemen Christo Bilukidi and Jack Crawford, who made the roster for now.

Allen would not address the status of any of his injured players, including receivers Denarius Moore (hamstring) and Jacoby Ford (left foot), center Stefen Wisniewski (calf), kicker Sebastian Janikowski (groin) and defensive tackle Richard Seymour (knees).
