Raiders might have a very unlikely ally for a new Oakland stadium
Oakland officials could ultimately find a partner in the very league that's kept them at bay.
The NFL hasn't ruled out a move to lead its own stadium-building efforts in the city, according to Street & Smith's Sports Business Daily. Potential sites would be near their current home at O.Co Coliseum.
"We have for several years stated: 'Don't put a real estate developer between the Raiders and the City,'" NFL executive vice president Eric Grubman said in an email to Bay Area News Group's Matthew Artz. "'If there is development available, talk to the Raiders about it -- or perhaps the Raiders plus (the) league.'"
Given the league's hard stance on public-funded fields and the quagmire of Oakland's stadium woes, it seems like a long-shot. But city officials would have to pursue this powerful partnership, if available.
It benefits both the league and city to do so. Oakland would get to keep its native team, and the league would solve its three-team Los Angeles logjam.
