Post-Game Recap: Oakland Raiders vs. San Diego Chargers

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The Oakland Raiders (4-1) moved into a tie for first place in the AFC West Sunday evening after beating the Chargers at home shortly after the Atlanta Falcons handed the Denver Broncos their first loss of the season.

Facing a 4th & 2 from the Chargers 21-yard line, Jack Del Rio made yet another gutsy late-game call, and it payed off once again. This time Derek Carr hit Michael Crabtree on a beautiful toss in the corner of the end zone. The play gave Oakland a 3-point lead entering the 4th quarter.

The Chargers drove down the field to attempt a game-tying field goal with just before the two-minute warning, but rookie punter Drew Kaser botched the snap and the Raiders took over at their own 35-yard line, and proceeded to put the game on ice.

“We made enough plays to go home happy,” Raiders head doach Jack Del Rio said after the game.

Oakland is now tied for the second best record in the NFL after scoring 14 points off of 4 Chargers turnovers.

Philip Rivers threw two interceptions — one was picked off by Sean Smith, and the other was the first career interception for Raiders first-round pick Karl Joseph.

Newcomer Perry Riley Jr. led the team in tackles (7) and also forced a fumble, which was recovered by Reggie Nelson.

Stacy McGee registered 1.5 sacks, and forced two fumbles. One on a sack, which San Diego recovered. And the second was on Melvin Gordon, which was recovered by Karl Joseph.

Derek Carr completed 25 passes on 40 attempts for 317 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception, connecting for six with both of his dangerous staring receivers, Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree.

Cooper paced the Raiders with 6 receptions for 138 yards and one score in what was his best performance of the season. The touchdown was Cooper’s first of the season, and he was close to a couple more.

With starter Latavius Murray on the mend, the Oakland rushing attack could only muster 3.6 yards per carry.

Jalen Richard led the way with 31 yards on 8 carries (3.9 YPC), adding a 4th quarter touchdown with just under 13 minutes to go, which gave the Raiders a 10-point lead. The rookie back out of Southern Mississippi also added 66 receiving yards on 6 catches.

Oakland will defend its AFC West lead next Sunday when they host the Kansas City Chiefs.
