Panthers' OC Mike Shula not concerned about Cam, offense starting slow
The Carolina Panthers haven't exactly started off their 2015 preseason with a bang. As David Newton of ESPN pointed out, the team has scored just seven points on their first seven series spread across two games.
That's a pretty brutal way to start.
One of the players who has gotten off the slowest start is quarterback Cam Newton, who was 1-for-6 passing for 15 yards to start in the preseason opener. He rebounded with four straight completions in that game, but then went 0-for-4 with an interception to start the second game.
Once again, though, Newton bounced back. In preseason game two against the Miami Dolphins, he rebounded from the slow start, by completing four of his next six passes.
The slow starts may concern Panthers fans, but they apparently don't concern offensive coordinator Mike Shula.
"I'd probably be more worried if we had scored on every drive," Shula said with a laugh as he gave ESPN.com his state-of-the-offense address. "I mean, you want to look at consistent progress day in and day out."
"Let's just not focus on starting fast. Let's focus on it doesn't matter what part of the game it is, if a guy is open let's hit him."
Shula makes a pretty good point, but obviously, fans won't know how anything will play out until the regular season kicks off.
