NFL Rumors: Jim Harbaugh to Los Angeles Rams 'A Very Real Thing'

The Los Angeles Rams fired Jeff Fisher on Monday and it seems that hiring current Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh is a real possibility.

After an absolutely demoralizing defeat at the hands of the Atlanta Falcons, the Los Angeles Rams finally came to the decision everyone was waiting on. Sitting at 4-9 through 14 weeks, the Rams fired head coach Jeff Fisher. Admittedly, the timing was a bit odd considering that the veteran coach had signed a two-year extension one week earlier. However, it was a decision that seemed wholly necessary given the way 2016 has played out.

Now the speculation begins about who could be the next coach of the Rams. Considering the new market that they’re in and the need to make a splash, you have to imagine they’ll be going after big names. At the same time, though, they truly need someone who can improve the quality of football being played. One man who fits that bill would be former San Francisco 49ers head coach and current coach of the Michigan Wolverines, Jim Harbaugh. But that’s crazy-talk, right?

Maybe not.

Albert Breer of the MMQB appeared for an interview with Colin Cowherd on Monday morning. After the interview concluded, though, Cowherd came on the air and said that Breer dropped an interesting nugget on his way out. According to Breer, Harbaugh leaving Michigan to coach the Rams is a “very real thing,” (H/T CBS Sports).

Without question, Harbaugh has it made at Michigan. However, Rams owner Stan Kroenke has deep pockets and, though it’s a bit speculative, has to be ready to spend to make a big move. He has the funds and potentially the desire to put a big number in front of Harbaugh.

Moreover, Harbaugh has proven that he can turn an NFL team around quickly. The enigmatic head coach took over in San Francisco in 2011. In 2010 before his arrival, the team was just 6-10. Harbaugh turned the 49ers around quickly, going 13-3 and making it to the NFC Championship Game. He also won Coach of the Year that season. The following year, he went 11-4-1 and made it to the Super Bowl (though he lost) before going 12-4 in 2013.

Yes, Harbaugh ran his course quickly as he went 8-8 in 2014 before parting ways with the Niners and ultimately heading to Ann Arbor. But you can’t discredit the instant success he’s capable of bringing.

As of right now, Fisher’s pink slip is still hot off the press. However, Breer mentioned this Harbaugh bit even before the news broke that Fisher had been fired. Subsequently, there might be some real legs to this. If there is, we’ll find out about it sooner rather than later—probably some time around the conclusion of the Orange Bowl.
