NFL roundup: Arian Foster calls it a career

Week 7 of the NFL schedule ended with the Broncos taking on the Texans on Monday night. But it was a former Texans running back who grabbed the headlines.

Arian Foster came out of nowhere to become the most prolific running back in Houston Texans history. On Monday, Foster called it a career as a member of the Miami Dolphins, as he just did not have the drive to rehab back from another injury. Foster is the Texans’ all-time leader in rushing yards, and at 30 years old, said he is “walking away at peace.”

Had Foster returned, he would have likely been a backup the rest of the way, as Jay Ajayi has established himself as one of the better young backs in football. Ajayi became just the fourth player in the Super Bowl era to post back-to-back 200-yard games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills. Miami, surprisingly, won both of those games.

Staying in the AFC East, the New York Jets will be going back to Ryan Fitzpatrick as their quarterback for the time being. Geno Smith took over for the ineffective Fitzpatrick this past week, earning his first start of the season against the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately for Smith, he tore his ACL in the second quarter, and will now miss the rest of the season. With his contract up at the end of the season, Smith may have played his last down with the Jets.

The Sunday Night Football matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals ended in a tie, as both of the team’s kickers missed chip shots to win the game in overtime.

Chandler Catanzaro has now missed two potential game-winning field goals this season, but still has the confidence of his head coach. Bruce Arians told reporters on Monday that Catanzaro is still his guy, despite the kicker missing a 24-yarder to win the game on Sunday night. Catanzaro is 8-of-11 in his field goal attempts this season.

The Atlanta Falcons suffered a bad loss at the hands of the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, and now they may be without one of their playmakers for an extended period of time. Running back Tevin Coleman injured his hamstring during the Falcons’ 33-30 overtime loss to the Chargers on Sunday, and the Falcons may have to make a move to fill the roster spot. Starter Devonta Freeman is the only other running back on the roster, and Terron Ward is on the practice squad.

The Washington Redskins travel to London this week to take on the Cincinnati Bengals, though they may be without their biggest defensive star. Josh Norman, the Redskins’ huge offseason signing, suffered a concussion this past week against the Detroit Lions. Traveling across the pond could prove to be too much for someone in concussion protocol, and may go a long way in ruling Norman out for Sunday morning’s game.
