After Jordan Spieth recently sent some flattering praise his way, Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson responded by sending some autographed gear to the U.S. Open champ.

When asked last week ahead of the U.S. Open and during LeBron James’ remarkable efforts to single-handedly lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to victory in the NBA Finals, Spieth was among the sports superstars who were asked if James is the best athlete in the world. Spieth suggested that Johnson is as an accomplished football player as James is a basketball player.

“I would say yes, but I’d put into that same equation Calvin Johnson and Cam Newton,” Spieth said, via ESPN. “As an athlete, I feel like Calvin Johnson can do anything. Cam Newton’s hands are twice the size of mine; he’s a freak athlete. Or Bo Jackson still might be the best.”

Johnson evidently caught wind of Spieth’s high praise and sent an autographed football — bearing the message, “To Jordan, Best of luck on tour” — and a jersey to Spieth’s office in Dallas over the weekend while the golfer was navigating the treacherous course that is Chambers Bay.

Jay Danzi, Spieth’s agent, confirmed to ESPN that his client received the “kind gift.”

Johnson also took to Twitter on Sunday night to congratulate Spieth on his thrilling victory — which came after a stupefying closing stretch culminated by Dustin Johnson’s three-putt on the 18th hole — one that has the young golfer halfway to an improbable and historic Grand Slam after he also won the Masters earlier this year.
