Mangold, Jets close in on record deal

The New York Jets and starting C Nick Mangold have agreed to terms on a seven-year, $55 million deal, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. The report didn’t state how much guaranteed money is in the deal, which means it won't officially be considered complete until both sides agree to the guaranteed portion.

That being said, based on the numbers listed in this report, Mangold is set to become the NFL’s highest paid center on an average per year basis (APY).

Rams C Jason Brown was the highest paid player at his position at $7.5 million per season with $20 million guaranteed on a five-year deal. A source told FOXSports.com the first two years of Brown’s deal were guaranteed at $9 million. The rest of the guaranteed money comes in the form of an $11 million signing bonus. However, his five-year deal could void to four, but the team has an option to buy back the final year at the original base salary of $6.2 million, plus a signing bonus of $2.3 million.

Mangold’s widely believed to be the top player at his position in the NFL, so it’s not a surprise that the Jets eventually decided to pay him as such. He was on the final year of his rookie deal at a base salary of $3.3 million. His base salary for 2010 on the previous deal jumped from $725,000 to $3.3 million because he achieved escalators in his contract.

With Mangold’s deal out of the way, that leaves CB Darrelle Revis and ILB David Harris as the two other key Jet players without long-term deals. D’Brickashaw Ferguson signed a long-term deal last month.
