Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says that Tony Romo “looked good” in his most recent health examination with regard to a broken bone in his back.

Though the Dallas Cowboys got their first win of the season by defeating their NFC East rival Washington Redskins, 27-23, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had to give his update on the status of his injured starting quarterback Tony Romo.

Jones told the Associated Press after the Cowboys’ victory in Week 2 that Romo “‘looked good’ during an examination by team doctors.” This was part of the Cowboys’ ‘medical protocol’ to evaluate Romo’s health during the second week of the season.

Romo broke a bone in his back during the Cowboys’ third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Dallas has managed to get to 1-1 with former Mississippi State Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott under center for Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett.

When healthy, Romo has been a top-10 quarterback in the NFL. However, he has not played a full NFL season since 2014 when the Cowboys won the NFC East. Romo is 36 years old and physically might have already exited his prime.

Romo is a borderline Pro Football Hall of Famer, but his future with the Cowboys isn’t more than just a few years. Dallas really likes what they have under center in Prescott, but he was only a fourth round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Should Romo have his health mid-season, he should usurp Prescott in the quarterback depth chart. However if Prescott continues to impress, he could very well keep Romo from reclaiming his starting job.

It’s not that Romo still can’t play at a high level, but Prescott might be a better bargain under center for the Cowboys going forward. Romo’s improving health according to Jones does make for a compelling story line when he does return.
