Irsay on new deal for Andrew Luck: 'He will be here, trust me'
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay expressed optimism the team will be able to reach a contract extension with star quarterback Andrew Luck during the offseason that will lock up No. 1 overall pick long-term.
Luck will enter the final year of his contract next season. While Irsay told the Indianapolis Star last week bypassing the use of the franchise tag "is the goal," he said the bottom line remains the same.
“If we don’t get an agreement we still have time," Irsay said. "And he is going to be signed. There’s a reasonably good chance we can come to that agreement this offseason. He will be here, trust me. Andrew and I have talked – we talked after the end of the season – and he couldn’t be more excited.”
The 26-year-old Luck led the Colts the playoffs his first three seasons in the NFL before injuries kept him out of nine games in 2016. His next contract figures to place him among highest paid players in the league, if not at the very top.
