Gurley takes step back as offensive freeze continues for Rams

Sunday's 31-7 loss at the Cincinnati Bengals followed a recurring theme for the St. Louis Rams.

As has been the case during the four-game losing streak, the offense once again was a no-show. The Rams have scored one touchdown in each of the four defeats and the lack of a passing game has allowed defenses to focus on stopping running back Todd Gurley.

Gurley had his lowest production since his season debut in Week 3, rushing for only 19 yards on nine carries. After erupting for at least 128 yards in each of his first four career starts, Gurley has been limited to a combined 130 yards in his last three games.

“Just have to stay positive and just keep fighting strong,” Gurley said. “We might not be a playoff team, but, hey, we still are undefeated in the division. So we definitely look towards those games.”

St. Louis used Gurley in the wildcat and got some mileage out of the formation when Tavon Austin took a handoff and raced 60 yards to set up his own 5-yard touchdown run.

“It was pretty cool, especially the first time we ran it, Tavon running for 60 yards,” Gurley said. “It’s just something new we tried to put in.”

Even with the new wrinkle, one thing hasn't changed for St. Louis. The team has scored 10 offensive touchdowns in the last seven games and all have come courtesy of Gurley and Austin.

“We’re not getting much production out of the offense,” Rams coach Jeff Fisher said. “We understood the matchups this week, and we tried to get the ball out sideways. We made some plays, but not nearly enough."
