Giants' offense and Eli Manning enjoy sharp Monday practice

Published Aug. 31, 2015 11:53 p.m. ET

After a sluggish start to the preseason, the New York Giants' offense finally got something going in the third preseason game against the Jets. On a 14-play, 85-yard touchdown drive, the first team offense moved methodologically down the field via the run and pass.

It was their only first team touchdown drive of the night, and the Giants are looking for more as the head into the regular season opener. During Monday's practice, the offense was sharp throughout the team drills.

Quarterback Eli Manning even started to open things up with a few successful deep shots. Deep passing attempts were a staple of the offense for all of Tom Coughlin's tenure before offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo debuted a more horizontal passing attack last season.

Coughlin was happy to see the offense get back to attempting and completing deep pass plays during Monday's practice.

“I like the ball thrown down the field,” said coach Coughlin after Monday's practice, per Dan Salomone of Giants.com.

“I like taking shots. I like all of those things, and it is one thing to talk about it and another thing to do it.”

The Giants' passing offense thrived in the intermediate passing game in 2014. According to Pro Football Focus, Manning was one of the best quarterbacks in the league at the intermediate passing game. In 2015, the Giants will look to create more successful plays in the deep passing game as well.
