Everything to know for the Oakland Raiders Week 5 matchup against the San Diego Chargers.

It’s that time of the year again, where heated AFC West rivals the San Diego Chargers come into Oakland. After coming off a huge win over an undefeated Baltimore squad, the Raiders play host to a battered yet dangerous Chargers team.

Despite the multitude of injuries suffered by San Diego, one can never take a divisional rival lightly, even in the confines of their own stadium.

San Diego is led by our favorite goofball quarterback, 12-year veteran Philip Rivers. The former NC State Wolfpack star has always played stellar against Oakland, throwing for 4,835 yards and 31 touchdowns in 20 games, with a 14-6 overall record.

Despite this, Rivers will be without his best weapon, star wideout Keenan Allen, due to an ACL tear. On top of that, San Diego lost not only their best defensive player in star cornerback Jason Verrett, but one of the top 5 players at his position in the NFL.

Sunday marks the 113 all-time meeting between the Raiders and the Chargers, a history stretching back to the inaugural meeting in 1960 — a 37-52 loss. San Diego is 50-60 against Oakland over the course of the series, and look to break a two-game losing streak.

Things To Know:

With Latavius Murray ruled out of Sunday’s game with a toe injury, the light shines on the rookie duo of Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington to step up and carry the load against a tough Chargers front seven.

While both players are fan favorites, and for good reason, up until this point both had been complimentary type players for the Raiders. It’s time for the rookies to step up and prove to this staff that they can both be feature backs when called upon.

The second-year star hasn’t been burning too bright this year, although defenses have been keying in on the former ‘Bama wide receiver.

While many expected Amari to take the next step and become a truly dominant wide receiver for the Raiders, he has been putting up slightly better than average numbers and has failed to catch a touchdown pass through four games this season.

With both of the Chargers starting cornerback’s out with injury, this has to be a game where Amari steps up and makes his presence felt.

With a decimated San Diego Charger team flying into Oakland for a matchup, it would have been practically expected in recent years that Oakland would come out flat and their opponent would start hot, striking fist.

If Oakland truly wants to be taken seriously as a contender not only in the AFC West, but the NFL as a whole, they must come out hot and sustain momentum this week. One can never take an NFL opponent lightly, especially a divisional rival, and I fully expect Jack Del Rio to have this team ready to open AFC West play with a big win.
