Fantasy Football Week Two: Starts, Sits, and Sleepers

The Buccaneers started 1-0 and hopefully so did you in your fantasy football league.
Touchdowns are king in fantasy football competitions and Jameis Winston erupted for four in the first game of the year as he led his Bucs to a 1-0 start and sole possession of first place in the NFC South.

Starting running back Doug Martin out-touched his backup Charles Sims 23-to-7, but it was Sims who got the touchdown and the two finished with just a two point difference as a result.
For the receivers a great catch by Mike Evans put an exclamation mark on a 15.9 point week. Veteran counterpart Vincent Jackson was silent for the entire game really and finished with two catches for 18 yards (2.8 points in PPR leagues).
Austin Seferian-Jenkins may have lost his starting job but he didn’t lose the trust of his quarterback on the field as he pulled in a 30 yard touchdown strike during a crucial series in the game.
The defense came into the game with a sleeper tag but walked away with just three points in fantasy after giving up 24 points without securing a single turnover on the afternoon.
Anyone with linebacker Kwon Alexander on their roster was surely pleased with the return of the second year playmaker as he recorded a career-high 17 tackles with one sack to go with them. His effort gained his team owners 20 points making him the highest scoring individual defensive player in Week 1.
Where will this weekend take us as the NFL gets Week 2 in the books? Let’s find out.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Arizona Cardinals
Sunday, 18 September @ 4:05 PM
The Buccaneers take to the field in Arizona and try to send last season’s NFC runner-up to an 0-2 start.
START: RB, Doug Martin
In non-PPR leagues Martin was outscored in fantasy football by his understudy Charles Sims and many owners who spent an early draft pick on the fifth year back are probably getting some early butterflies.
One week doesn’t make a season, and one game shouldn’t derail any roster strategy you came in with to start the year.
In PPR leagues Martin finished in the top-20 for Week 1 placing him firmly in RB2 territory, but he also finished just five points outside of the top-12 meaning one score puts him into the RB1 class.
The touch ratio last Sunday was heavily in Martin’s favor and should be for this match-up as well.
Against a defense which relies heavily on blitzing and a cornerback in Brandon Williams who will require additional help from the Cardinals’ defense, Martin figures to get some more dump off opportunities.
If the Buccaneers offensive line can open some lanes for the runner to get through then we should also see some trademark “Dougernaut” runs in this one, and hopefully a touchdown or two.
SIT: Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defense
The Buccaneers defense secured the win with an impressive performance holding the Falcons out
of the endzone on three of their four possessions up close.
While it was enough to get the “W” on the road to open the year, it was only good enough to get them three fantasy points for Miko and anyone else who started the team’s defensive squad.
Going into Week 2 against the Cardinals the contest doesn’t get easier and the redzone stops will be a lot harder.
Larry Fitzgerald, David Johnson and Carson Palmer lead a very formidable offensive unit which can strike fast and strike often.
With sure hands and smart play being one of the trademarks of this team as of late it’s going to be hard for a young Bucs defense to find opportunities to capitalize on.
To beat Arizona it will take a lot of scoring and shoot-outs are not good for fantasy defenses.

SLEEPER: WR, Adam Humphries
Yes, of course, Charles Sims is a sleeper. So is Adam Humphries though.
The second-year player out of Clemson had just three catches for 34 yards and a single seven yard carry. He didn’t get overly targeted either as he caught just about everything thrown his way.
This is precisely why he’s on the sleeper radar this week. With Patrick Peterson assumed to be covering Mike Evans all afternoon the Cardinals will have to bring help over to the previously abused rookie starting opposite of their All-Pro corner.
Meanwhile, veteran addition Cecil Shorts should get some work with the offense this week as well and will keep safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Tony Jefferson occupied with the deep ball.
All of this combined with Arizona’s infatuation with blitzing makes his quick route running and sure hands style the exact venom to try and take down this NFC West giant.
6 catches for 60 yards is a modest output, but if you tack on a touchdown with it, it’s a 15 point day for the Buccaneers third receiver.

New Orleans Saints @ New York Giants
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
Brees vs. Manning in what looks like an offensive highlight show in the making.
START: QB, Eli Manning
Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard and Victor Cruz are the three reasons you need to start Eli Manning in Week 2. The fourth one is simple: The New Orleans Saints defense.
The “Big Easy” hasn’t been able to fix the defensive woes they thought firing Rob Ryan would fix, and it was obvious in Week 1 against the Raiders.
Coming into this game the hometown Giants should look to throw early and often as they exploit a mismatch on every down.
Simply put, the Saints just don’t have the players on defense to guard the weapons on the New York sideline.
Scoring will be the theme in this one and this is a game you can probably catch in its entirety on the Redzone Channel.
SIT: RB, Mark Ingram
The Saints are obviously a pass first, second and third team with the run game coming just enough to let Drew Brees keep his shoulder attached to the rest of him.
58 yards on 12 carries isn’t going to excite anyone even with the two catches for 29 yards added to it.
A weak offensive line playing in front of Ingram may be to blame for the most part, but the defensive front has to get some of the credit as well. The Raiders front line kept Ingram contained in their matchup and it kept the Saints from being able to bleed the clock late last week.
In Week 2 New Orleans will take their starting running back to New York and pit him against a much improved Giants’ defensive line.
This defensive front gave up just 51 yards on 20 carries to rookie Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas and don’t figure to give up much more to the more experienced Ingram.
This will be a high scoring affair, but this running back will likely find himself on the outside of all that production.
SLEEPER: TE, Coby Fleener
Coby Fleener had one catch in Week 1 and many have sent him to the waiver wire as a result.
Coming into Week 2 though Fleener may find an opportunity to redeem himself to fantasy football owners, even if it’s temporary.
The Giants surrendered nine catches for 66 yards to Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and another eight catches for 65 yards to wide receiver Cole Beasley who often operates in the short to intermediate range.
For Fleener these are good numbers for him to see and if the New York defense gets a bit too aggressive against Brees and his soft offensive protection then the Saints may look to take advantage of some quick routes with their tight end.
Week 1 was a disaster and there’s always going to be a little bit of talk surrounding the fact Andrew Luck’s college teammate was left to sign elsewhere so easily.
This week however, Fleener could save you some money in daily fantasy contests and could be rewarded handsomely for it if he hits.

Dallas Cowboys @ Washington Redskins
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
Dak Prescott looks for career win #1; Kirk Cousins doesn’t like that.
START: RB, Ezekiel Elliott
If you have the rookie out of Ohio State on your roster then it’s likely you spent a top-20 pick and even possible you used a top-10 pick to grab him. If this is the case then he needs to be your workhorse or I hope you have some crazy sleeper spotting skills.
Fantasy football is a game which lives and dies off the production of your top players as they’re usually the one you lean on to put you over the top after the rest of your roster sets the table for a victory.
In Week 1 Elliott notched his first career touchdown on a day where he scored 12.2 points ranking him 24th and on the cusp of falling out of RB2 consideration.
If he’s going to live up to the pre-season hype then this is the game to do it.
While most of the post-game discussion has surrounded Josh Norman and his lack of coverage on the Steelers’ best receiver, fantasy owners need to look at the stat line achieved by DeAngelo Williams.
143 yards, 2 touchdowns and six catches for 28 yards placed Williams a full 2.5 points higher than the second place running back for Week 1 – another backup by the way.
If Dallas’ line performs up to snuff then Elliott should have his fantasy welcome all of his owners wanted to start the year.
Sep 1, 2016; Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant (88) on the sidelines during the game against the Houston Texans at AT&T Stadium. Houston won 28-17. Mandatory Credit: Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports
SIT: WR, Dez Bryant
1 catch for 8 yards is what Dez Bryant got for fantasy owners in Week 1.
Maybe it was good coverage? Maybe. Either way the Pro Bowl wide receiver had a single catch on five targets. Following the game his quarterback Dak Prescott said he wasn’t going to force the ball to him, and why should he?
Young quarterbacks are often criticized for taking too many chances and Prescott is taking what the defense gives him. Jason Witten had nine catches while Cole Beasley hauled in eight from the slot.
As teams blitz and try to dupe the rookie into throwing easy interceptions he’s going to throw to the guy with the most green around him and fewest enemy jersey’s. Unfortunately for Bryant owners, he’s not that guy.
I’m not saying dump him all together, but it may take a few weeks for Prescott and his boisterous playmaker to really sync up in the regular season. If you have the depth to wait it out, go for it.
SLEEPER: WR, Terrance Williams
Terrance Williams was the joke of the week after his disastrous gaffe at the end of the Giants vs. Cowboys game cost his team a shot at winning the game, but it cost them a shot – not the game.
So, looking outside the realm of what could’ve been let’s see what actually was. Williams had three catches for 34 yards on four targets.
If the Redskins do any scouting from Week 1 the first thing they’re going to see is Dak Prescott likes the middle of the field. This should lead to more linebackers in coverage and we may even see some safeties dropping down into the box in pass coverage as well.
Josh Norman will be looking to quiet all of his critics from last week so expect a fierce battle between him and Dez Bryant. So this leaves us Terrance.
Williams is not a superstar by any means but the young man has talent and he should draw a cornerback in Bashaud Breeland whose confidence has to be shaken after the abuse he took from Antonio Brown.
Six or seven catches in Week 2 isn’t too high a number for Prescott and Williams to connect on, and if even one of those goes for a touchdown you’re looking at 12-15 cheap points.

Miami Dolphins @ New England Patriots
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
Jimmy G looks for a 2-0 start to his starting career while the Dolphins try to prove they can hang with playoff teams.
START: WR, Julian Edelman
The New England Patriots look like they’ll be sitting Pro Bowl tight end, and fantasy football stud, Rob Gronkowski for at least one more week.
Honestly it’s starting to look like Gronk’s first game back could be Brady’s as well.
If this is the case then Julian Edelman will continue to be the main guy to look at for fantasy football options from this team.
Last week in the Patriots stunning victory over the Arizona Cardinals Edelman brought in seven catches for 66 yards. He didn’t have a score in the game, but I wouldn’t worry about that too much.
Seven seems to be the key for the slot receiver as twice last year he hauled in seven catches and two touchdowns in each game.
The New England receiver had Miami’s number last season, and the 2015 version had cornerback Brent Grimes on the field who has since left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
This version of the Dolphins secondary isn’t nearly as equipped to handle his playmaking ability, so Edelman may be in line to get even more work and put up even more points for his faithful owners.
SIT: WR, Jarvis Landry
Going against division rivals always seems to bring out a little bit more of a competitive spirite.
For Jarvis Landry it seems to bring six catches for 70 yards. Twice in 2015 the Dolphins main receiver brought in that stat line with 72 and 71 yards in the two games played against New England.
Zero touchdowns is a red flag for fantasy owners, and it should be. In three career games against the Patriots Landry has never caught a touchdown pass.
In his one 2014 match-up he did haul in eight catches for 99 yards which would lead to a respectable 13.9 point outing.
If history is a sign of the future then Landry is in line for 8-12 points this Sunday, not the numbers fantasy football owners are looking for out of their wide receivers.
SLEEPER: QB, Ryan Tannehill
That’s not a typo. If there’s one player to call a true sleeper in this match-up it is Ryan Tannehill.
While he may not be an elite quarterback by most standards the Dolphins gunslinger has had three straight 300+ yard performances against the Patriots dating back to 2014 when he threw for nearly 350 yards and a touchdown in a loss in Foxboro.
You don’t need him to win to get you points and that output would have netted you over 20 points.
Yards don’t always equal touchdowns though, and in the same three matchups since 2014 Tannehill has only thrown three touchdowns along with four interceptions.
If Miami’s quarterback listens to new head coach Adam Gase then the turnovers should drop and the touchdowns will come.
This guy is a real sleeper because if you insert him into your lineup you’ll do so with your eyes closed hoping for another 300+ yard day and a touchdown or two to go with it.

San Francisco 49ers @ Carolina Panthers
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
1-0 team versus a 0-1 team – just like we expected…
START: WR, Kelvin Benjamin
After missing the entire 2015 season Kelvin Benjamin came back and made himself known to the rest of the NFL world with a statement performance.
Unfortunately it came in a losing effort, but in the fantasy football world this is an irrelevant fact.
Relevant is the six catches he had going for 91 yards and a score against Denver’s elite pass defense.
Anyone who believes Benjamin isn’t coming into Week 2 still feeling like he wants to prove he’s good-to-go will be sorely mistaken as the effort should mirror Week 1. The only difference is the competition.
The San Francisco 49ers may have defeated the Rams and made Case Keenum look terrible, but Cam Newton is a whole different story and so will be the outcome.
He and his top receiver should have big games, so start both of them.
SIT: San Francisco 49ers Defense/ST
Did we talk about the Carolina Panthers being a different team than the Los Angeles Rams?
Well they are. The 49ers defensive unit kept the Rams in check all day and even stopped the 2015 Offensive Rookie of the Year for less than 50 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Todd Gurley may not have found success last week, but the Panthers offense is a better all-around unit and this defense will not be able to focus on stopping just one or even two guys.
The combination of Newton, Jonathan Stewart, Kelvin Benjamin, Greg Olsen and Tedd Ginn Jr. is just too much for this unit to deal with.
SLEEPER: RB, Carlos Hyde
Sep 12, 2016; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers running back Carlos Hyde (28) rushes for a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams during the first half of an NFL game at Levi
Trevor Siemian threw for less than 200 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while earning his first career win as a starting NFL quarterback.
The win came by way of the Broncos stout defense and 92 rushing yards by running back C.J. Anderson.
The Denver running back was not and still is not considered a top fantasy target by any means but 15+ points carrying the ball is a good week no matter who the guy is.
Carlos Hyde was able to pound the Rams for 88 yards and two scores, but may find even more yards against this Panthers defense if the 49ers can take advantage of a weak Carolina secondary.
Forcing the great linebackers on the Panthers defense will open up space for Hyde to run and with his bruising style of running all he needs is a head start to make some plays.
When the ball gets down into the redzone it should be a heavy dose of the run for San Francisco meaning more work for Hyde and a chance to succeed against one of the tougher defenses in the NFL.

Tennessee Titans @ Detroit Lions
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
Stafford continues his takeover of the Lions offense against Tennessee at home.
START: WR, Tajae Sharpe
If there was any doubt who the top receiver was for Tennessee coming into Week 1 those questions have been answered.
Fifth round rookie Tajae Sharpe has not only been a gem for the Titans but a fantasy football target as he started his career with more than 14 points against the Vikings in a loss.
Seven catches is impressive for any rookie but the 11 targets he got from quarterback Marcus Mariota is flat shocking.
The fact Sharpe made good on most of those targets should keep them coming and going against a Lions defense which allowed four players to go over 50 yards receiving is a good Week 2 matchup.
Detroit also gave up four passing touchdowns last week, so while Sharpe may not have recorded his first touchdown in the NFL just yet, his time should be coming soon.
SIT: RB, Derrick Henry
Marcus Mariota is the future of the Titans franchise and you don’t build the future by putting it on the shelf.
Mariota will throw and throw often. In Week 1 he passed 41 times. Partly because of the deficit they faced against Minnesota, but also because – he’s the future of the franchise.
Henry got three touches and starting running back DeMarco Murray got a whopping 13. Did I mention this team is going to throw the ball?
Henry never looked to me like a viable fantasy football option, but I know some out there took saw different. Unless Murray goes down to injury Henry is a hero or nothing candidate every week and simply isn’t important enough to this offense right now.
SLEEPER: QB, Matthew Stafford
The Titans gave up the fourth most points to opposing quarterbacks in 2015, and started 2016 by giving up 236 yards passing to veteran Shaun Hill.
Depleting the Vikings quarterback scoring was the utter lack of touchdowns as he threw exactly zero, but he also threw zero interceptions against the Tennessee defensive unit.
Matthew Stafford threw three touchdowns and 340 yards to rank fourth in Week 1 among fantasy quarterbacks against a Colts defense which was nowhere near as bad as the Titans were last season.
Stefon Diggs went over the century mark last week against this defense so expect Golden Tate and his quarterback to do some similar things in Week 2 with Stafford finding fantasy success for the second straight week.
Aug 27, 2016; Chicago, IL, USA; Kansas City Chiefs running back Spencer Ware (32) celebrates after his team scored against the Chicago Bears during the first half of the preseason game at Soldier Field. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports
Kansas City Chiefs @ Houston Texans
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
Brock over Jay Cutler in Week 1, can the Texans make it two in a row to start the Osweiler era?
START: RB, Spencer Ware
I told you to start this man last week and if you listened you got the third most fantasy football points scored by a running back in Week 1.
25.9 points may not have been the most, but if you lost with him in your lineup it was due to some other very poor decisions.
Charles is doubtful for Week 2 and Ware will be the man to grab again if he doesn’t suit up again.
11 carries for 70 yards was the lowlight of his stat line last week as he turned 7 catches into 129 yards torching the Chargers defense for nearly 200 yards of offense and one score.
Facing the Texans this week looks like a somewhat tougher matchup on paper but linebacker Brian Cushing was injured in Houston’s last game and won’t be back for a while.
Start him again, especially if Charles is out, but even if the Chiefs get their starter back I might still keep Ware in there.
SIT: QB, Brock Osweiler
Sep 11, 2016; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler (17) in action during the game against the Chicago Bears at NRG Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports
As a Bronco quarterback Brock Osweiler got just one start against his former division rival, and it didn’t go too well.
He did get a touchdown pass but he tacked on an interception and was held to under 150 passing yards on the day.
No offense to the Texans’ wide receivers, but they’re not as good as Denver’s group and Osweiler will be leaning heavily on Lamar Miller to carry the team for most of the day.
Some big plays are possible for the young quarterback with a stable of receivers designed to burn any secondary in the league, but he doesn’t have the experience against this team or elite defenses at all for me to trust him here.
SLEEPER: RB, Lamar Miller
Lamar Miller proved his nay-sayers wrong as he ripped off over 100 yards of offense while being the featured player in Houston’s Week 1 offense.
He won’t get the workload he did last week every game, but it’s clear the Texans believe he can carry and occasionally catch them to playoff contention and it should be more of the same against the Chiefs this weekend.
Kansas City is known to have a good defense but for much of last week the team looked downright pedestrian. In total, Chargers running backs ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
While San Diego split this workload between Danny Woodhead and Melvin Gordon, Miller should get all of those chances to eat to himself.
Kansas City came to life in the second half last week, but still gave up some pretty heavy numbers to the duo of Woodhead and Gordon. There’s no reason to think Miller can’t do the same.
May 18, 2016; Berea, OH, USA; Cleveland Browns tight end Gary Barnidge (82) catches a pass during official training activities at the Cleveland Browns training facility. Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports
Baltimore Ravens @ Cleveland Browns
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
The post-RGIII era begins in Cleveland.
START: TE, Gary Barnidge
The Browns tight end totaled 230 yards receiving and a touchdown in 2015 against the Ravens.
His quarterback was Josh McCown. Now, after a Week 1 injury to Robert Griffin III, Barnidge has his quarterback and another matchup against Baltimore in Week 2.
He had zero catches in the Week 1 loss to Philadelphia as the Browns offensive unit looked for deep connections more than they looked for safe plays to stay on schedule.
McCown will certainly want to take advantage of new-found talent on the outside, but you can rest easy here knowing he’ll be looking to his Pro Bowl target more than a few times against the Ravens.
Terrelle Pryor and Corey Coleman look like legitimate upgrades over last season’s receiving group but Barnidge should benefit the most from the return of McCown.
Start him this week and you too could benefit from the misfortune of others.
SIT: RB, Isaiah Crowell
Give credit to the Browns starting running back who averaged 5.2 yards per carry last week, Isaiah Crowell played a pretty good game. His team just couldn’t get into position to allow him to build on what he had going on.
Going against the Ravens doesn’t look like he’s going to get many more chances either as the Baltimore offense seems to match-up well enough to prevent Cleveland from being able to get truly run-focused.
Further muddying the waters for Crowell is the return of quarterback Josh McCown whom we spoke about previously.
His ability to make smart decisions means the team should trust the pass game more and this limits the effectiveness of this Browns running back.
It simultaneously improves the stock of his teammate Duke Johnson who carried the ball just three times in Week 1 but got the majority of passes his way out of the backfield.
SLEEPER: QB, Joe Flacco
Neither of these teams really excites and even with Mike Wallace’s 90 yard with a touchdown performance I’m not sold he can do it every week; even if he did it against Buffalo’s “elite” defense.
Flacco looks to be the best bet to get starter type points from the Ravens roster after putting up nearly 260 yards through the air and a score.
Joe Haden will be covering someone and whoever he’s covering likely isn’t getting the ball thrown his way on the down.
Expect Baltimore to shift their receivers around to create matchups they want and Flacco should have plenty of time to read the field against a Browns defense which notched two sacks but little else in Week 1.

Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers
Sunday, 18 September @ 1:00 PM
The AFC North’s top teams battle for first place in the early race for the division title.
START: WR, A.J. Green
A.J. Green started off his season with a boom gaining 180 yards on 12 catches adding a touchdown for good measure.
Fantasy footballers everywhere loved having him on their roster and Week 2 looks like another prime chance for the Bengals top receiver to send another message.
In two games last year Green averaged 8.5 catches per game for an average of 125 yards and one touchdown in each contest.
The Steelers brought in some new talent for their secondary but this unit needs more time to gel and practice together before they’re really able to improve as a unit which gave up the second most fantasy points to wide receivers in 2015.
Last week the Redskins had four guys go over 50 yards receiving including DeSean Jackson who went over 100.
This week should be more of the same, and another good game by Green.
SIT: Both Bengals Running Backs
This game looks like a shootout in the making which is a problem for the Bengals running backs.
Giovanni Bernard simply isn’t getting the looks he needs to be trusted as a viable fantasy option and Jeremy Hill isn’t good enough to be taken seriously as a receiver out of the backfield.
Both of those facts make starting either of these guys a hard thing to do, and sitting them much easier.
Neither player reached 50 yards of total offense against the New York Jets. In fact, if not for a touchdown by Hill, neither would have broken five fantasy points on the day.
In both 2015 contests between the Bengals and Steelers Hill and Bernard touched the ball fewer than 20 times in each game, so don’t expect the trend to stop now.
SLEEPER: RB, DeAngelo Williams
Aug 12, 2016; Pittsburgh, PA, USA; Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams (34) warms-up before playing the Detroit Lions at Heinz Field. The Lions won 30-17. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports
I don’t know if DeAngelo Williams can really be considered a sleeper anymore. It seems anytime the Steelers have to go without star running back Le’Veon Bell, Williams turns up and shreds defenses for real stats and big time fantasy points.
29.1 points led all NFL ball carriers in Week 1 and he’s going to be getting the full workload in Week 2 again.
The Bengals defense surrendered over 130 yards of rushing to Matt Forte and Bilal Powell of the Jets, so you can bet Williams will have some chances to make splash plays this Sunday.
Consider the pass catching ability of Pittsburgh’s temporary starter and the talent is obviously something this team will look to capitalize on.
If Green gets going early then things will open up closer to the line of scrimmage and Williams could be the guy to take over at that point.

Seattle Seahawks @ Los Angeles Rams
Sunday, 18 September @ 4:05 PM
Case Keenum’s chance for redemption comes against the “Legion of Boom” as NFL Football returns to LA.
START: RB, Thomas Rawls
Thomas Rawls is getting healthier by the week and his head coach has given him the green light to return as the team’s starter for their contest against the Los Angeles Rams.
In four of his seven starts Rawls has rumbled for more than 100 yards rushing as he was a breakout surprise in 2015 behind the now retired Marshawn Lynch.
After seeing what Carlos Hyde did against the Rams defensive front seven I wouldn’t be surprised if Russell Wilson threw the ball less than 20 times all day.
Rawls is going to want to make a statement himself coming back for his first game as the team starter in the backfield, and unless Los Angeles found a way to do a complete 180 in just a week it doesn’t look like they’re well equipped to stop him.
More from The Pewter Plank
SIT: QB, Case Keenum
This may be a bit obvious but it’s substantial because this may become the last time I can even put this name in a weekly fantasy football piece.
Simply put, if you’re on the bench you can’t score points; in fantasy or otherwise for that matter.
Head coach Jeff Fisher said he wouldn’t put up with 7-9 (expletive) during this season of HBO’s Hard Knocks. Well, in Week 1 he got some 0-16 (expletive) and all he could do was stand there and take it.
Like it or not Fisher is on the hot seat after the debacle against the team which was supposed to be the worst in the NFC West by a couple light years.
Another division opponent cranks the pressure to 1,000 for both the coach and his quarterback which means this QB may be on the bench before halftime if he comes out flat again.
It could become Jared Goff time sooner rather than later in LA, but at the least it’s probably wise for Sean Mannion if he’s preparing to play on Sunday.
SLEEPER: RB, Todd Gurley
How does a guy go from being one of the top running backs drafted in fantasy leagues to a sleeper pick one week into the season? 17 carries for 47 yards and no touchdowns is how.
Gurley was absolutely shut down by the 49ers defense in Week 1. The team dared Case Keenum to beat them and the quarterback failed to live up to his end of the Los Angeles hype machine.
The result was a defense which pursued the running back so aggressively he never had a chance to really do anything with the ball.
He only had one chance to face the Seahawks defense last year, but he did relatively well by gaining 80+ yards on the ground and a touchdown in the Rams Week 16 win against Seattle.
If he can get his groove back it would go a long way to helping his quarterback and coach to keep their respective jobs, but the way San Francisco handled him brings in just a hint of doubt making him a sleeper pick for Week 2.

Atlanta Falcons @ Oakland Raiders
Sunday, 18 September @ 4:25 PM
Kyle Shanahan tries to get his offensive unit clicking after going just 1-for-4 in redzone touchdowns in their Week 1 loss.
START: QB, Derek Carr
Jameis Winston threw for under 300 yards but had four touchdown tosses in the process. Drew Brees rang up the Raiders defense to the tune of 423 yards himself.
So which quarterback is the better start? Stats would hint Matt Ryan would be the better choice facing a defense which just surrendered over 30 fantasy football points to the opposing quarterback.
The real answer though is Derek Carr and the defense isn’t the reason, Brees is.
Drew Brees has the ability to throw 400+ yards against any defense, let alone a less than superior one. Jameis Winston however, needs some help at times to go along with his vast potential.
The Raiders defense is better than they looked in Week 1 and their pass rush is better on paper than the one which sacked Ryan three times in Atlanta.
Carr finished 8th in the NFL among fantasy quarterbacks last week playing against a week NFC South secondary. He gets another here, and gets the win to go with his stats this time.
SIT: Oakland Raiders Defense/ST
Yes, the Falcons are going to give up quite a few points and quite a few more fantasy points this weekend, but it doesn’t mean this will be a blow out win for the Raiders.
Their defense is better than it looked last week – true – but it’s still susceptible to big plays and can be beaten by speed.
If the Falcons have one thing on offense it’s speed as Julio Jones, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman all represent big play possibilities every time they touch the football.
Mohamed Sanu is no slouch either and has the ability to catch quick slants in the face of a blitz when his quarterback gets it to him quickly.
Oakland finished last year as the 22nd ranked defense in total defense, so while they may be better than they looked last Sunday, it isn’t by a whole lot.
Sit them, even against a Matty-Ice who seems to be melting a bit each week.
SLEEPER: RB, Latavius Murray
Aug 18, 2016; Green Bay, WI, USA; Green Bay Packers linebacker Nick Perry (53) tackles Oakland Raiders running back Latavius Murray (28) during the first quarter at Lambeau Field. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports
Latavius Murray quietly averaged 4.2 yards per carry in New Orleans for Week 1 while his previously unknown teammate Jalen Richard maintained a 28 yards per carry average on just four carries.
A touchdown run gave Murray 13.2 points ranking him 15th among NFL running backs in fantasy scoring.
An RB2 performance in a shootout with a rookie busting seemingly every run into a long touchdown is no small feat, and shows just what Murray’s potential holds.
The defense he’s facing this week at home against the Falcons is much more running back friendly historically as they finished last season as the sixth worst team against fantasy runners.
However, last week Atlanta frustrated Doug Martin and the Buccaneers run offense so badly the team turned to Charles Sims as they looked to throw out of the backfield more as the game went on.
Murray should still get the majority share of touches despite the big play demonstration put on by Richard, and could be a lower cost addition for daily fantasy gurus.

Jacksonville Jaguars @ San Diego Chargers
Sunday, 18 September @ 4:25 PM
No Bosa and No Allen means the Chargers will struggle to harass the Jags’ and keep up with them on the scoreboard.
START: TE, Julius Thomas
Julius Thomas may just be back to form after finishing last week third among fantasy football tight ends.
The Chargers on the other hand are buckling up for a rough year after surrendering a big lead, losing their best receiver to injury and gave up the fifth most points to an opposing tight end in Week 1.
Just last year Thomas took advantage of the opponent friendly San Diego defense by collecting 116 yards receiving and a touchdown catch.
Look for more of the same especially with the news first round pick Joey Bosa will still not make his NFL debut as he struggles with injury after missing just about everything leading up to now.
SIT: QB, Philip Rivers
This decision has nothing to do with Rivers himself and everything to do with what he has left to work with and the defense he’s facing.
Jacksonville spent time, money and draft picks to improve their secondary and they’ve done just that.
Yes they lost to Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers, but if not for the athleticism of Rodgers and his ability to extend plays the game could have been a lot different.
The Jaguars will be looking to get in on the less mobile Rivers all day and his receivers will be in a constant battle for every pass thrown their way.
With the loss of Keenan Allen third year receiver Dontrelle Inman has moved into a starting role according to the Chargers depth chart. Tyrell Williams remains an option, but after just one week of production there’s no way to call him reliable just yet.
The defense will be flying around the field and chances are Rivers is going to have a rough day all around leading to limited potential in fantasy scoring.
SLEEPER: RB, T.J. Yeldon
Chris Ivory is going to sit out Week 2 after missing last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers.
In the Week 1 contest Yeldon put up just 39 yards on 21 carries for a dismal 1.9 yards per carry average. So why in the world would anyone start this guy a week after that?
Simple really, because he’s facing a Chargers defense which gave up the fourth most fantasy football points to running backs in 2015, and surrendered 28.2 points just last week.
Yeldon has the ability to run and catch passes out of the backfield making him a dual threat who can really take some of the pressure off of Blake Bortles in the right match-up.
This is that match-up and he’s one to watch in this one.

Indianapolis Colts @ Denver Broncos
Sunday, 18 September @ 4:25 PM
A tale of two Manning successors.
START: QB, Andrew Luck
Andrew Luck has thrown multiple touchdown passes in seven of his last eight games played, including two against the Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl winning defense in November of last season.
It was Luck’s last game played before last week when he put four touchdowns on the board before being shut down for the year.
The Colts have had their struggles, but maybe Luck isn’t to blame for them. More important in this context, maybe his fantasy football team owners aren’t having the same struggles as he regularly provides them with top tier production.
The Broncos are banged up and defensive end Derek Wolfe is no guarantee to play as he battles a neck injury. T.Y. Hilton is also dealing with an injury, but seems good to go for this Sunday afternoon at Mile High.
If you have Luck on your roster start him with confidence and if you have the money to add him to your daily roster, do so.
SIT: QB, Trevor Siemian

So just like Andrew Luck gets the blame for struggles in Indianapolis, so to do quarterbacks get credit sometimes for wins they didn’t completely contribute to. Of course, Broncos fans are no strangers to this idea.
To his credit, Siemian did what all mediocre quarterbacks aim to do; he didn’t lose the game.
178 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions leads to a fantasy scoring total of 9.1 points which ranked 30th among all NFL quarterbacks in Week 1.
So, before any homers go picking up Denver’s quarterback and anointing him the next Elway, remember stats don’t equal fantasy wins even when the stats came in real game victories.
SLEEPER: RB, C.J. Anderson
C.J. Anderson was the big surprise of opening night when the Broncos defeated the Panthers to start the NFL season.
His 92 yards on 20 carries helped limit Cam Newton’s opportunities and his touchdown run contributed greatly to his team’s victory.
Four catches for 47 yards and another score added gravy to his contributions and gave anyone brave enough to start him last week 25.9 points; tying him for second best among all running backs.
So has Anderson turned a corner in his development? Maybe. Has he become a top-5 fantasy option? Not quite.
He did have a great game, but make no mistake the Panthers defense was not in true form last Thursday. Whether this is true or not makes no difference at this point as the Colts defense tries to stop him in Week 2 to avoid going 0-2 to start the year.
Indianapolis gave up a combined 109 yards rushing on 19 carries with Ameer Abdullah averaging 5.2 yards per carry as the primary back for Detroit.
Fellow back Theo Riddick also picked up five catches for 63 yards and had two touchdowns on the day.
The Colts looked ill equipped to stop the running backs from Detroit so Anderson has a very real chance to make it two great performances in a row, and put his name squarely on the list of potential fantasy breakout players.

Green Bay Packers @ Minnesota Vikings
Sunday, 18 September @ 8:30 PM
Sam Bradford looks just about ready to take the reins when Aaron Rodgers and the Packers invade Minneapolis.
START: QB, Aaron Rodgers
The Vikings defense came up big in their Week 1 victory over the Tennessee Titans and quarterback Shaun Hill didn’t have to throw a single touchdown pass to get the win.
Week 2 brings a different level of competition though as Aaron Rodgers and his Packers come to town.
The offense has been trying to get Sam Bradford brought up to speed as quickly as possible because in a tight division like the NFC North this is a crucial game for both sides.
In two games last season Rodgers threw for nearly 500 yards combined while tacking on three touchdown passes in a season split.
The Packers quarterback hasn’t been held without a touchdown pass against the Vikings since November of 2008 and has compiled several three or four touchdown performances against their division rival.
Rodgers finished seventh in quarterback scoring last week, and should be able to improve on that ranking for Week 2.
SIT: QB, Shaun Hill / Sam Bradford
Shaun Hill is a game manager, albeit a good one, but those quarterbacks won’t win you fantasy match-ups.
Sam Bradford is the new kid and has zero chemistry with his receivers at the moment.
No matter who the quarterback is you need to let them simmer for a week or two before you think about leaning on one of them to fill a bye week or carry your roster.
Hill threw for less than 200 yards in a Week 1 win much more focused on stopping the Titans than outscoring them.
There’s nothing wrong with the gameplan for a real-life football game, but in fantasy offense wins games and offense wins championships.
Find a quarterback looking to score.
SLEEPER: RB, Eddie Lacy
14 carries for 61 yards isn’t going to excite any fantasy football fans, but his history against the Vikings might.
In Week 17 Lacy rushed for just 34 yards on 13 carries and had zero touchdowns. Prior to that game though, the big back had ripped off five straight 100+ yard efforts against Minnesota with touchdowns in each of them except one.
Not a bad track record against his division rivals and not bad numbers as far as consistency is concerned.
Seemingly finding another gear when facing Minnesota Lacy has already been praised for looking better this season than last, now let’s see if he can return to breaking 100 yard games in Minneapolis.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Chicago Bears
Monday, 19 September @ 8:30 PM
Carson Wentz makes his Monday Night Football debut on Soldiers Field.
START: WR, Jordan Matthews
Carson Wentz may have found his favorite target in his first NFL game.
He and wide receiver Jordan Matthews connected on seven passes for 114 yards and a touchdown as they beat the team who could have had Wentz: the Cleveland Browns.
The Chicago Bears surrendered 28.7 points last week to Texans receivers as they dropped their first game of the year, and Matthews will be looking to take advantage of a subpar secondary.
Last Sunday’s touchdown gave Matthews his fourth straight regular season game with at least one touchdown reception.
Going against a Bears defense which allowed two touchdown throws with one going to a rookie, this is a match-up the Eagles primary receiver can exploit and find space to get points for those fantasy football enthusiasts who add him to their team.
SIT: RB, Ryan Mathews
Lamar Miller ran for 75 yards in the first half against the Chicago Bears last week, but totaled less than 30 for the entire second half.
The run defense from the windy
Sep 11, 2016; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz (11) celebrates after running back Ryan Mathews (not pictured) scores a touchdown in the fourth quarter against the Cleveland Browns at Lincoln Financial Field. Mandatory Credit: James Lang-USA TODAY Sports
city is better than they appeared in the first half last week and Ryan Mathews stands to fall victim to it as he tries to build upon a serviceable performance.
His team got the win, but Mathews finished 14th among all running backs. Considering how talented Miller seems to be than Mathews, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Eagles’ back get contained all game long.
SLEEPER: QB, Carson Wentz
After an impressive first game Carson Wentz has certainly silenced some of his critics. Connecting seven times with Jordan Matthews certainly helped as every quarterback is a fan of consistent receivers.
Week 2 he faces a Bears defense which gave up more than 200 yards and two touchdowns to the Houston Texans and quarterback Brock Osweiler.
Now Wentz doesn’t have the weapons they have in Houston and he certainly doesn’t have the experience of even a Brock Osweiler, so the gameplay will definitely be different.
Philly fans will be hoping Wentz can get even more fantasy points than he did last week, as the Eagles with their rookie quarterback look for a 2-0 regular season start
