Dez Bryant has X-rays on foot, but Cowboys aren't sure what next step is
The Dallas Cowboys are taking it very slow when it comes to Dez Bryant's recovery from offseason foot surgery. The star wide receiver had X-rays on his surgically repaired foot Wednesday, and the team sounds like it's still working on the next step in Bryant's rehab.
"Hopefully he'll be cleared to take the next step and then we have to decide what that next step is," coach Jason Garrett told reporters.
Bryant is likely to be held out of team drills until training camp opens in late July, ESPN reported Wednesday. Bryant, who was placed on injured reserve in Week 15, played in nine games last year after suffering a broken bone in the season opener.
Garrett added that Bryant has shown signs of improvement, but the team will wait to see how his next examination goes.
"He's done a really good job in his rehab," Garrett said. "He's been involved in some of the walk-through situations and I think he's benefited from that. He has not practiced. Once he does some of the walk-through stuff — he's really watching practice and doing his rehab on the side. All of that has gone well. We'll see how he does with that next examination and we'll make our decision from there."
Bryant had career lows in receptions (31), receiving yards (401) and receiving touchdowns (3) last season. But despite the injury, he has some big expectations for 2016, saying last week that he's looking to top his career year of 2014.
"Man, I'm not even trying to [get back] to 2014," Bryant said. "I'm past that. I'm going to be better than that. I'm going to. The way we've been working, the way the coaches have been on us, the way we've been holding each other accountable, I think that alone is going to make us all be better than what we were in these past years."
