A few days after Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones referred to Dez Bryant as “Superman” due to his evidently otherworldly recuperative powers, head coach Jason Garrett provided a more concrete update based in the real world concerning the wide receiver’s progress in recovering from surgery.

Garrett indicated Bryant, a little more than three weeks after he underwent a procedure to repair a fractured fifth metatarsal that included a bone graft and a screw being inserted into his right foot, has started doing some light running on a treadmill. The Cowboys coach did indicate, though, that Bryant has not yet returned to the practice field.

“Getting in condition without putting too much stress and strain on his foot, so he has not been out running routes or anything like that up to this point,” Garrett said, via ESPN. “There are different ways to run where you can kind of get yourself in as good a shape as possible leading up to it, so he’s been involved in that.”

The Cowboys are holding out hope that Bryant is ready for the team’s Oct. 25 showdown with the New York Giants in Week 7. With Dallas enjoying their bye a week prior, it would serve as a perfect opportunity for Bryant to ease back into game shape. Given the tilt with the Giants is 44 days after Bryant’s surgery, it would put him just short of the seven-week mark, right in line with the original four-to-six-week estimate provided by Garrett shortly following Bryant’s surgery.

With the 2-2 Cowboys facing a formidable task with the New England Patriots coming to town on Sunday, having Bryant back for their next game two weeks later after the bye certainly would be good news much needed by the injury-plagued team.
