Citing a source, Alex Marvez of FOX Sports reported that there's a "strong possibility" Mangini returns for a second season as the 49ers' defensive coordinator under new coach Chip Kelly.
San Francisco ranked 29th overall in total defense and No. 18 in points allowed (24.2) in 2015, although the unit was markedly better at home, permitting an average of 16.9 points. The defense wasn't helped by an offense that ranked last in the league at 14.9 points per game.
Mangini posted a 33-47 record in a pair of head coaching stints with the Cleveland Browns (2009-10) and New York Jets (2006-08). He also was on Bill Belichick's staff with the New England Patriots for six seasons, serving as defensive coordinator in 2005.
