Dallas Cowboys: What to expect from cornerback Jourdan Lewis

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 11:24 p.m. ET

The Dallas Cowboys went all-in on addressing the cornerback position which included drafting Jourdan Lewis in Round 3, but what can be expected of him?

At the outset of all the 2017 NFL Draft talk, the name of Michigan Wolverines cornerback Jourdan Lewis had gained some steam. With many teams — including the Dallas Cowboys — high on him, Lewis saw his stock fall some with a charge for misdemeanor domestic violence. In March, he pled not guilty to the accusations, but many teams were afraid to touch him with any red flags.

As early as the Senior Bowl the Cowboys were rumored to have interest in Lewis, and they finally decided pick No. 92 was worth any fall back from the allegations against the talented Lewis. But what kind of player did they actually get?

    Height: 5-10
    Weight: 188 pounds
    40-Yard Dash: 4.54 seconds
    Vertical Jump: 34.5 inches
    Career Tackles: 135
    Career Interceptions: 6

Lewis is considered by most to be best suited for slot corner play. He has quick feet and excels in press coverage, but lacks the ideal height to succeed on the edges regularly. He plays faster than his 40-yard dash time indicates and was decent in generating turnovers as he had two picks in each of his past three seasons.

    Dallas Cowboy Comparison

One former Cowboys player that Lewis could compare favorably to is former Super Bowl MVP Larry Brown. Both players were listed at 5-0 and Brown was similar in weight at 184 pounds. He also was never the main guy in Dallas, which will likely be the case for Lewis — at least initially.

What Brown and Lewis share though is a strong competitiveness and an ability to take advantage of the chances thrown their way. Look for Lewis to find himself as No. 4 on the depth chart to start his rookie season, but don't be surprised to see him develop into a contributor as the primary nickel back for years to come.
