Dallas Cowboys Tony Romo hitting the weight room hard

Following yet another injury, Dallas Cowboys veteran quarterback Tony Romo has been hitting the weight room hard according to one of his teammates.

As a 36-year old NFL quarterback, Tony Romo has learned the importance of keeping himself in top physical shape. While Romo attempts to stave off Father Time, the Dallas Cowboys veteran starter has extra motivation to do so as he’s suffered more than his fair share of injuries the past few seasons.

In 2013, Romo fractured the transverse process in his back. Last season, he broke his collarbone twice. And to add insult to literal injury, the veteran gunslinger suffered a compression fracture to his back in the third preseason game this year forcing him to miss half the season already.

Despite the back injury, Romo is determined to get back on the field this season. Although his back-up, rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has posted a 5-1 record under center, many still believe Tony is the man that can and will lead Dallas to postseason success this year.

Prior to his latest injury, Romo proclaimed he was in great physical shape. The veteran told reporters in early August that it was the best offseason he’s had in a long time and that he was able to do all the stuff he wasn’t always able to do due to his previous injuries.

But following his injury setback, both Romo and the Cowboys organization have been pretty quiet about his ongoing rehab. Obviously, the media’s focus has been more about the stellar play of Prescott in Dallas. But Romo’s return to the field was originally projected to be this week.

Although Romo has already been ruled out to play Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, for the first time this season he was a limited participant during Thursday’s practice session.

One Cowboys defender did have a little inside scoop about what Romo has been doing to get back onto the field. Apparently, he’s been bulking up.

“[Romo’s] been working hard in the weight room,” Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence told the Dallas Morning News’ Jon Matchoa. “I see him more in the weight room than the locker room. That;s a surprise, seeing a quarterback in the weight room. But I feel like he’s taking care of his body. He’s getting back in shape. I feel like he is going to be great.”

Romo has been focusing on strengthening the muscles in his back ever since he suffered the injury to his transverse process back in 2013. So it comes to no real surprise he’d be attempting to do the same following his latest back injury. But the fact he’s been doing enough work in the weight that a teammate on the defensive side of the ball has taken notice is a real positive.

And the veteran will need to be in tip-top shape if he’s going to take over a Dallas Cowboys offense that has been on a five-game winning streak going into Sunday’s much-anticipated matchup against the Eagles. When or if Romo is reinserted into the starting lineup, he’ll need to immediately play well in order to stave off the Prescott era from beginning prematurely in Dallas.
