Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey getting reps at DT during OTAs
Defensive end Jeremy Mincey led the Dallas Cowboys with six sacks in 2014 while serving as the team's primary right defensive end. In 2015, defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli might have something new in store for Mincey. With Greg Hardy, Randy Gregory and a healthy Demarcus Lawrence added to Marinelli's arsenal, he is using OTAs to experiment with using Mincey at defensive tackle.
During Wednesday's OTAs practice, Mincey slid inside to right defensive tackle. The entire look included Hardy at right defensive end, Tyrone Crawford at left defensive tackle and Lawrence at left defensive end.
The Cowboys' impressive depth at defensive end has allowed Marinelli to mix and match. He could end up using multiple combinations in different down and distances. Mincey is especially excited about what this group can offer the team in 2015.
“We were working a bunch of different combinations [Wednesday], which was great,” Mincey told Cowboys reporters after the practice. “Randy Gregory is coming along. Really solid pass rusher. They had me and Mr. Kraken (Hardy) here working together. You know what I mean? A lot of good, man. We’ve got a lot of depth, a lot of players you can trust. I think we’ll make some impactful plays for the Cowboys.”
Mincey likely won't cause any problems if Marinelli decides to move him to defensive tackle for a high percentage of snaps.
“I love taking on guards one-on-one. I mean, it’s less running than being at end anyway.”
Mincey is a valuable piece to a defensive line rotation that is expected to generate more pressure in 2015 after finishing 2014 with just the 28th-most sacks of any defense in the NFL.
