Could Jets sign Bryan Stork for depth on offensive line?

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

The New York Jets need some depth on their offensive line as they brought in center Bryan Stork for a visit this week.

It’s no secret that the better teams in the NFL always have quality depth across their team. To win plenty of football games is to win the battle of the trenches. While the offensive line of the New York Jets has been good the first two weeks of the season, injuries have already hit the positional group.

On Tuesday, as per Rich Cimini of ESPN, the Jets brought in center Bryan Stork for a visit. Better known for his tenure with the New England Patriots the past two years, Stork would be a very nice addition for the Jets despite his injury history.

Technically, Stork was supposed to be traded to the Washington Redskins this offseason but the deal fell through to him failing the physical check. The Patriots promptly released him and even though he has a history with concussions, would make a lot of sense for the Jets to sign for depth purposes.

Due to James Carpenter getting injured in Week 2 with a calf injury, it will take some time for him to return back to normal. He will more than likely play in Week 3 action against the Washington Redskins but won’t be at 100%. The Jets’ offensive line is also only getting older and the season is always a long journey ahead.

One of the best attributes of Stork which Cimini even credited him with, is his versatility to play various positions on an offensive line.

Stork can effectively play center, offensive guard, or even offensive tackle.

The depth on the Jets’ offensive line is pretty thin and if a serious injury or decline in play should occur, Stork should be able to step in and have it not miss a beat.

It’s important that the Jets evaluate their visit with Stork and see if he fits the plan at what they want to accomplish this season.

Since the Jets are committed to establishing the run, it’s imperative their offensive line continues to play this well. Establish running lanes and gaps for the potent rushing attack of the Jets helps open everything else up offensively. Plus, the longer quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is upright, the more time he’ll have to continue his momentum.

Overall, Stork would be an interesting acquisition for the Jets considering he won’t break the bank to sign him. His ability to be a plug-and-play offensive lineman would be a quality option to have coming off the bench.
