Costly cussing: Jets coach Bowles gets a 'swear jar'

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 1:43 p.m. ET

NEW YORK (AP) Todd Bowles needs to curb his cussing - or it'll cost him.

The New York Jets' normally low-key coach used some profanity during his news conference after a 31-28 victory over winless Cleveland on Sunday. He was talking about his stern message to his team at halftime, when the players acknowledged Bowles had some choice words - aka, not suitable for innocent ears - for them after an awful first two quarters.

Jackie Davidson, the Jets' director of football administration, has a simple solution. And, no, not washing his mouth out with soap.

''I guess she's going to put a swear jar in my office,'' Bowles said Monday. ''And every time I cuss, I'm going to have to put a dollar in it. So I'm going to have to watch myself.''

The Jets struggled to a 1-5 start, but have won two in a row to keep the playoffs at least a possibility. But a few more foul outings, and that jar might fill up quickly.
