Colts Sign Wide Receiver Devin Street

With Donte Moncrief’s status for Sunday uncertain, the Indianapolis Colts signed former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Devin Street for additional depth at the position.

The Indianapolis Colts announced on Wednesday that the team has signed wide receiver Devin Street from the New England Patriots practice squad with their open 53-man roster spot.

Of course, the signing of Street indicates that starting wide receiver Donte Moncrief–whose recovery timetable from his MRI results on his shoulder have still not been released, could miss at least a game or two.

Originally a 5th round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in the 2014 NFL Draft, the 6’3″, 200 pound Street spent the past two seasons playing for owner Jerry Jones‘ team but was part of their final 53-man roster cuts in early September.

Street was subsequently scooped up by the Patriots, who signed him to their practice squad to start this season.

The former University of Pittsburgh standout has appeared in 30 career games (2 starts), catching 9 receptions for 132 total receiving yards and a touchdown reception.

During this past preseason for the Cowboys, Street had 3 receptions for 24 receiving yards in 4 games (1 start).

In Moncrief’s absence, 2nd-year wideout Phillip Dorsett will start alongside T.Y. Hilton, while either Quan Bray or Chester Rogers should get the majority of the reps as the 3rd wide receiver.

Street was likely added for additional depth at the position and should make the majority of his mark on special teams.

It is somewhat surprising that the Colts opted to sign Street, rather than promote rookie wide receiver Tevaun Smith from their practice squad–who showed flashes of his potential in preseason and already has familiarity with the offensive playbook.

However, it could simply be a case of this only being a short-stint for Street, whereas it’s not necessary to release Smith from the organization and eventually subject him to waivers. Not to mention, Street may be more apt to be able to contribute on special teams for the immediate future.
